Simpsons Special Care Babies (SSCB) is a charity run entirely by volunteers. Founded in my home town, Edinburgh in 1985. Originally called Friends of Simpsons Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (FOSNICU) until 1996. A bit of a mouthful. The charity was relaunched in 1996 as Simpsons Special Care Babies (SSCB).
The charity has come a long way over the years. From a handful of people working tirelessly with no resources, not even a room to work from. To what they have become. Never losing focus on their goals.
The aims of the charity are to raise funds to provide;
Technology moves so fast it can be difficult for the NHS to keep up. Lack of financial resources means that it is not always possible to purchase the latest life-saving machinery. Having access to the most up to date equipment will give tiny babies the best possible treatment.
Simpsons Special Care Babies (SSCB) has helped purchase;
VT-Veinsite vein finder. Approx cost £3,000. A common challenge in premature babies is detecting veins. This machine helps staff to detect difficult to find veins.
Transport Incubator. Approx cost £120,000. Sometimes babies need to be moved to another hospital for life-saving treatment. The lifesaving transportation incubator was purchased to do this as safely as possible.
SSCB don’t just make sure that the unit has the equipment and training to look after tiny and sick babies. They also make sure that the parents have the best experience possible.
V create. Approx cost £6,750. A secure virtual app enabling video messaging and pictures to be sent to parents. Keeping them up to date when not at the hospital. 4 out of the 6 iPads are supported by SSCB, along with the yearly subscription fees.
To make sure that all the special babies in the unit receive the very best care, SSCB funds training, seminars and workshops for the medical and nursing staff each year.
As well as participating in groundbreaking research, supporting parents and the importance of reading to babies in the NICU.
How can you help SSCB?
There are lots of ways you can help the SSCB and it doesn’t have to cost you a penny. You can donate your time and ideas or become a committee member.
Organise a fundraising event, bake sale or a sponsored run or walk. If you’re more adventurous you could do an abseil or a skydive.
You can purchase merchandise from the SSCB shop and gift items to friends and family. This also helps spread awareness of SSCB.
SSCB also have the option to donate once or set up a regular donation.
